EHS Management: How to Keep Your Employees and Facility Safe

Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) management is the process of preventing or mitigating environmental, health, and safety hazards in the workplace. It covers the policies and procedures used to identify and control risks, and the training that ensures employees can work safely within them.

For most companies, EHS management is good practice. For Seveso-classified sites, a large part of it is a legal obligation: the EU Seveso III Directive (2012/18/EU) requires major-hazard companies to operate a safety management system - in the Netherlands, the veiligheidsbeheersysteem (VBS) - covering seven defined elements, from hazard identification to audit and review. Keep that distinction in mind as you read; the fundamentals below apply everywhere, but the bar is higher when a regulator can ask you to prove each one.

The starting point is the same in either case:

Identify potential hazards. Conduct a risk assessment to find the hazards specific to your workplace. On a Seveso site this goes further: you must identify and evaluate major-accident scenarios - loss of containment, fire, explosion, toxic release - not just day-to-day occupational risks.

Develop policies and procedures. Build controls that address the hazards you identified, specific to your operations. Generic templates rarely survive contact with a real facility, and they certainly don't survive a DCMR or Nederlandse Arbeidsinspectie inspection.

Train employees. Everyone needs to know the hazards, the procedures, and who to contact with questions or concerns. Training records matter too - "we trained them" is a claim; a dated record per employee is evidence.

What EHS Management Involves

EHS management means identifying and assessing risks, implementing controls to mitigate them, and monitoring conditions to confirm the controls actually work. The risks range from chemical exposure and slips, trips, and falls to ergonomic hazards - and on major-hazard sites, the failure of safety-critical equipment such as pressure relief valves, gas detection, or containment systems.

Three things determine whether the system works in practice:

Communication. Employees need to know the risks in their area, how to avoid them, and who to contact with concerns. On a multi-shift Seveso site this is harder than it sounds: a hazard flagged on the day shift has to reach the night shift too, not sit in someone's inbox.

Training. Working with chemicals, handling hazardous materials, operating equipment - each requires demonstrated competence, not a one-time induction. Refreshers and records close the loop.

Monitoring. Track accidents, injuries, and near-misses, and look for trends so corrective action targets the pattern, not just the last incident. For Seveso sites, monitoring performance is a VBS element in its own right: regulators expect to see that near-miss data feeds into review and improvement, not just a log.

The EHS Management System

An EHS management system is the framework that holds all of this together: the policies, procedures, training, and monitoring, organized so they run as a system rather than a collection of documents.

The benefits are concrete:

Compliance. A working system keeps you aligned with regulations and able to demonstrate it.
