Kotug International has been a maritime towing pioneer out of Rotterdam since 1934, operating tugs that manoeuvre far larger ships in and out of harbours. It is close-quarters, high-power work in confined water and open sea, with real hazards, line snap-back, girting, heavy weather, run around the clock. Managing safety across crews scattered on vessels doesn't fit a rigid, form-heavy tool, and Corporate QHSE Manager Marijn Cox needed something that matched how crews actually work, and that he could shape himself.
As a user it appeals to my normal way of working. These days I can make a picture, make a doodle on the phone to describe a situation, take a photo and enter it into the system.
The bigger shift was on the other side of the app, the design side. Instead of bending Kotug's process to fit the software, Marijn could bend the software to fit Kotug.
From a manager and designer perspective, Capptions gave me freedom. It gave me options in how to use the system and how to rethink how we were providing our people with support.
